I'd like to add 2 wireless cameras to my existing Arlo Q. Can I just buy the cameras or do I also need to buy the base unit?
If indeed i need the base unit, will this be a separate system or can the 3 cameras all be connected somehow?

The Arlo Q cameras and the Wire Free cameras work on totaly different technology, so to add the Wire Free cameras you will need a base station. But, all the cameras will be setup under your existing account and will show up in the app and website.

You can not add cameras to the Q camera...it is a stand alone hooking directly to your home wifi.
If you add Arlo cameras ( arlo, Arlo pro, Arlo pro2 ) you must run a base unit as the cameras only link to the base.
All cameras would be visible in the app or web access.... But the base cameras and the Q cam have to be armed separately.
