I love my Arlo Pro, but what I'm missing is ability to define custom zones for monitoring. You can't just cover to blank out zones by removing the sensitivity and change the angle of the CAM. I also would like to see getting Apple HomeKit support that would integrate Arlo Pro into my Smart Home.

This is more hardware than software so don't think it will change much in the future...
The PIR device that senses motion covers the entire field of view and can't be changed

Presumably some of this can be accomplished with the same type of technology as what now appears to be called Arlo Smart.
Dropcam has been able to do this for ages using only software.

I'm not familiar with Dropcam but I wonder if it has to do with server-side processing.

The way I assumed it would work was some combination of both.
The Dropcam/Nest line is, IIRC, is all AC based and can afford to be streaming constantly to the server for processing without any real regard for local resources like battery life.
As far as Arlo is concerned, I wouldn't be surprised if it relied on PIR for the initial detection and then processed the stream remotely to validate if the motion was significant to the user.
I have no idea if the Arlo cameras have any capability on-device for analysis, but if they do, they would presumably eat more power, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were holding back release of the "smart" features until after the various outdoor power accessories were generally available.

Arlo wireless cameras are all PIR-based while the powered Q and Baby use pixel-based detection. There's an effort called Arlo Smart that uses server processing to determine what caused the motion but that's not a released option yet.
