It was mentioned in the community that devices cannot be connected to 5G network. Does this make my system obsolete?

No - wifi still uses 2.4 gHz.
The advantage of 2.4 gHz is that it has longer range then the other WiFi bands. That's particularly useful when the cameras are outdoors (some distance from the base or router).

I switched to 2.4gHZ on the phone app and tried to connect. It didn't work. I'm not sure if the internet provider won't allow the switching. Is that a possibility?

No. We're talking about your home wifi, not your internet connection. Your ISP doesn't care what wifi band you use.
