Pro 5S 2K, VMB5000

(Mac Computer, Iphone) Family member has had the Pro2 with the VMC 4030 with 7 day memory. I'm looking at the Pro 5S 2K with VMB5000. I only need indoor camera system, 7 day memory recording, 160º peripheral view. 

1-I gather that free 7-day memory is obsolete and that I must have a subscription for the 60-day memory and retrieval/download ability.

a-Without a subscription is it possible download the live devices feeds to a local hard drive from the router or computer? What is cheapest subscription I need for this?

b-Do I need a base station to do this?

c-What does the base station do that not having it can't do? I do want to edit settings from my laptop or iphone

2-Do I need the PRO 5S cameras or something cheaper?

3-With PRO 5S 2K is there a powered option, so that I can keep cameras plugged in all the time with no battery weakening?

1-A) Using the app (NOT the computer), you can view local recordings from the hub which actually downloads them to your phone and then plays them. You can also eject the drive for viewing on a computer and do what you will with them.

1-B) Yes.

2) Any camera that connects to the hub will work. That includes almost any camera, including the cheaper Essential models.

3) Correct.
