We have an older Arlo system but we'd like to upgrade, possibly to the 5S. Does the Arlo still use geofencing?

If you buy Pro 5, you'll have to update the app's user interface. I suggest you check the forum for posts on geofencing, as there have been some problems reported about it, though I don't know the details.

I have the details.  Basically it's not 100% working.

  1. I have set up geofencing that if everybody leaves home, then change to a mode that arms all of my cameras.  Turns out that it works some 75% of the times, and for the remaining 25%, it simply doesn't work.  So it's not reliable.
  2. I have also set up geofencing that if anybody returns home, then change to another mode that disarms all of my cameras.  Turns out the it works some 75% of the times, and for the remaing 25%, it doesn't.  So it's not reliable.
  3. There was this "duplicated device" issue that if you share your main ARLO access to another login user, there will be incorrectly more devices considered for geofencing --- which then fails the whole logic.  There was a "stupid" solution though --- avoid sharing access to another account, but asking all family members to login the same master account.  Not the best, but this is the way I am surviving now.

Not trying to start an argument here, just a counterpoint. I agree that GF isn't totally baked but a basic setup is working (mostly) for me. We only have 2 phones to track, both Android, so that may be part of the reason it works (or not). I've tried various "fixes" suggested here in the forums with no real difference and sometimes making it worse so I'm back to simplicity. The one (almost) major fly in the ointment is that the schedule I have switching from nighttime to daytime setups overrides the GF reality. That means if we're home, all works properly. If both are away from home, regardless of being away and desiring all cameras to be active (nighttime mode), it will switch to the daytime mode. Since I know this, I manually have to switch modes.

Yup, I've tried enabling/disabling automations, etc. to fix this but nothing has worked for me. YMMV.
