I have 3 Arlo Pro 4 cameras and a VMB5440 base station. One of the cameras is too far from the base station to get a good signal and there are three walls between it. If I move the base station to the rear, the front camera has a weak signal, if I move it to the front, the rear camera is weak.
Has anyone had any luck adding a second base station as an extender to a single system? I could easily run a long ethernet cable to another base station. Will the two talk to each other?

I use two base stations, and that is a good solution to your problem. Note that they don't talk to each other, and to shift cameras to the new one you will need to remove them from the account, and then re-add them.
