I have an older Arlo system with the vmb 4000r3 base unit. I bought a new Pro 4xl with a vmb-4540 base. Do I just swap out the base, add the 4 xl’s and also add a few of my older cams? Or just keep the old base unit and add the Pro 4 xl’s?

"It depends." (TM)
Use of 2 bases/hubs can be useful for providing optimal signal to all cameras while using the VMB4540 enables you to more easily use local recordings as a backup (you can access the videos via the app). If you choose to use the VMB4540 by itself, remove all devices from your account, claim the new hub and then connect all cameras to it.
