I have a 2T seagate drive formatted by my VMB4540 which has worked for a year but now indicates it needs to be formatted even though it only has 24G stored in it. The VMB will indicate this if I reset it but as soon as an even triggers a camera it reverts to disk needs to be formatted.

Have you tried connecting the drive to a Windows PC, and testing it with Seatools?
FWIW, Arlo hubs (all models) only supply USB 2.0 power, which can cause issues with many external hard drives. I think it works out better to use a flash drive (generally 128 GB to 512 GB gives you more than enough storage).

The drive seems to work fine when plugged into my laptop but as described suddenly stopped working when connected to the VMB4540.
I’ve been using this drive for about 2 years without any issues until now. As I said, I’d I reset the system it shows 24G used and roughly 1.9T available but if I then walk in front of a camera and trigger it to record it notifies me and then when I try to look at the video it says “no recordings” and as I look further it will either say “needs formatting” or just looks like no drive is attached.

Do you have a flash drive you can also try in the smarthub (something at least 16 GB) - the idea there is to rule out a failure in the smarthub USB interface.
