What protocols are used for communication between the Arlo Pro 2 cameras and the base station?  Is this customizable to keep the communication secure?

It's dedicated 2.4GHz WiFi, just as with all Arlo wireless cameras and bases. While anything is possible, there's no user access to the base or the encrypted stream.
