The original Wire Free, Pro and Pro2 cameras do require a base station. The Q, Q Plus and Baby models do not. You should be able to position the base stations as far as an ethernet cable would reach, but you probably want to position the base stations near the center of your home so that the signal to and from the cameras is optimal. The signal strength of each camera will determine the location of the base units.
