Tried connecting the base station, but the app never finds it. This while the base station is ethernet connected to a Netgear Nighthawk router that's been working for years (except real bad wifi reach by the way) and only has amber light. Also tried connecting the station directly to the switch from the broadband modem; the internet light turns green, but still won't connect. Useless.

Tried resetting several times. In chock that a product can be so useless in 2018..

It sounds like you should contact support.  If that does work, you should return the product and try a new one.  My very first experience with Arlo back in July 2015 started out this way. I couldn’t link the base station.  Support was really bad and I returned and replaced the system.  The next one worked out of the box with no problem.

Connecting directly to the modem and getting the green Internet LED indicates that it's your router blocking access for some reason. However, you'll never be able to set up the system since the base has to be on the same network as your setup device (phone or computer) which means the base has to be connected to your base. Your base seems to be fine since you get the proper LED indication.

You can try rebooting your router - it may be that simple. If not, some setting in the router is blocking access such as allowing only certain MAC addresses to be able to access the Internet. There are other possibilities, too, such as port blocking but you will need to figure out what needs changing. Worst case, you could factory reset the router and set it back up again.
