How to extend the Wi-Fi range of an Arlo camera if it is out of range or has low signal strength

If your Arlo camera is out of range or has low signal strength:

Make sure your home network and devices meet the minimum requirements for Arlo.

Place your Arlo cameras in a location with a strong Wi-Fi signal.

For optimal performance, make sure your cameras display full signal strength in the area where you intend to install them.

  • The cameras can work when signal strength is at one or two bars, but they might go out of range intermittently due to fluctuations in the environment.

Minimize the number of networks, Wi-Fi devices, and transmitted frequencies in the area where you place your Arlo SmartHub, Arlo Base Station, and Arlo cameras.

Place your Arlo cameras no more than a maximum of 300 feet (90 meters) from the Arlo SmartHub, Arlo Base Station, or Wi-Fi router.

  • The maximum line-of-sight range of 300 feet is reduced by each wall, ceiling, or other major obstruction between the camera and Arlo SmartHub, Arlo Base Station, or Wi-Fi router.

To reduce Wi-Fi interference, place the Arlo SmartHub or Arlo Base Station a minimum of 6 feet (1.8 meters) away from your Wi-Fi router.

  • The best place for a Wi-Fi router is in a central area with minimal obstructions between it and the Arlo devices.

Try to place your Arlo cameras 10 feet (3 meters) away from the Arlo SmartHub or Arlo Base Station, and allow at least 6½ feet (2 meters) between cameras.

  • The following materials can reduce Wi-Fi signal strength if they are located between Arlo SmartHubs, Arlo Base Stations, and Arlo cameras:
    • Unusually thick walls and ceilings
    • Brick
    • Concrete
    • Stone
    • Ceramic
    • Glass (especially mirrors)
    • Metal
    • Large quantities of water, such as the water in a fish tank or water heater

Keep the Arlo camera battery charged above 25%.

  • Low battery power can cause intermittent streaming issues and fluctuations with Wi-Fi connections.

Make sure your Arlo devices are using the latest firmware.

Secure your home network by utilizing proper password protection.

  • Keeping neighbors and unauthorized users off your wireless network will help keep your Wi-Fi signal strength at an optimal level.

Change the wireless channel on your Wi-Fi router.

  • Selecting a less crowded channel can reduce the amount of interference and improve your signal strength.
  • Check the instructions that came with your router for assistance with adjusting the channel settings.

For Arlo cameras connected directly to a Wi-Fi router, try changing the Wi-Fi network that your camera is connected to.

For Arlo Pro 5S Cameras, connect to both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network.
