Support more storage options

There are 2 type of markets:

Group#1: You have the none-techincal people, who just want to turn everything on, and start using it as a "for dummies" style. Everything is simplifed and beautifully presented to them without need to know all the technical stuff. They are welling to pay a reasonable fee for making their life easier.

Group#2: On the other hand, you have the computer geeks, like myself, would prefer my recordings goes to local NAS and then automatic synced to my OneDrive, this way I get a copy locally and a backup copy in my cloud. I know how to configure it, am familar with troubleshooting if have a problem. and frankyly I couldn't care less about the the nice interface after it has been configured. And i don't want to pay for more money when I already got tens of GB of cloud storage available at my dispose.

I see Arlo is satisfying only group#1, and making some money off the subscription. But I think group#2 would prefer an IP camera over Arlo partly due to the space limitation. If Netgear can support pushing recording to various cloud storages (local NAS, OneDrive, Amazon Cloud, Dropbox...etc), then you might get more share of group#2 market.

Just few ideas after using the system for a while:-

Obviously the local backup using the usb ports is a biggy, and it would seem straight forward to implement.

I would like to be able to trigger multiple cameras via the rules. I had a look and it doesn't seem possible at the moment.

How about a rechargeable battery pack.

How about a POE module to replace the battery if circumstance allow?

How about updating the snapshot of the last video, when looking at the cameras, it would be useful to see a still image of the current view.

 I don't mind that everything goes into the cloud for first stage storage.  it does make it easier for Homeland Security to get at the stuff they really should be seeing anyway.  what i object to is not being able to easily store the same images, my images, locally.

I'm talking with our network specialists at work about putting a packet sniffer on my home internet so we can see what code is being transmitted and the format of the files being upl-house developersoaded to the NetGear cloud.  From there we hope to be able to gchallenge  one of the inhouse developers to write an api call that will copy the transmission locally even as it is being uploaded to the cloud.

they tell me that this Big Brother culture works both ways when you start playing in the IOT (internet of things) space.  they seem to be quite hopeful that a hack is possible, given time.  which also means that the bad guys can do the same thing and start to steal your images.

I agree .. seems like a pretty easy way to skirt these security cameras . Cut the power and presto , no recording of thief. Don't need to be "smart" crim to pull that one !

In response to RobWest comment about videos expiring after 7 days…. My understanding is a bit different. I think the 7 days means that based on typical camera use, the basic plan has enough storage to cover 7 days of use (again assuming typical usage). The more cameras, the more activity the less number of days you will be able to store. Based on my experimentation and calculation, you will get about 5 hours of video per 1 GB. I don’t think videos expire. Am I wrong here?

Back to the topic, I'm guessing their silience on this issue goes back to their bottom line. I assume they are not making a huge margin on the hardware and are counting on subscriptions to make the product/service profitable. So, how about some sort of compromise?

Plans will stay the same but will include the ability to store recordings locally up to that plan's limit. There will be an additional plan for those that want local recordings only. This gives people plenty of options, while also allowing Netgear to profit.

These cameras are a brilliant idea but would be useful in twice as many locations if I could save the video locally rather than the cloud. I love the idea of having either option. But some locations are just too sensitive for cloud storage, the work being what it is.

This product is great for about 5 min... Then I was really disapointed by lack of standard features one would expect for this kind of product.

1. No local storage. I wrongly assumed that was a function of the base station.

2. No Local straming. This thing is really laggy and with data caps creeping in seems really wastefull to have to send the data out to the cloud and back to watch.

3. No network configuration of the device. Broadcasting the SSID to say come steal my cameras.

These are shortcommings after just the first hour of use. I understand the subscription model Netgear wants users paying into but if thats the only option this kit is way over priced.
