Can the wire-free model VMS3530 not connect over WiFi? Does it need to use the base? What model is equivalent where I can use wire free and over WiFi?

The cameras in that kit use closed wifi to reach the base (which is required).
Cameras that can connect directly to your home wifi include the Pro 3 floodlight (not the regular Pro 3), Pro 4, the video doorbells, and the Arlo Essential cameras. All of these models require a paid subscription to get recordings (among other features).
