Starting a new security system

If I’m starting with cameras at my second home, can I just buy two cameras?   Or do I have to also buy a system with the hole base station??

The whole system unless you buy cameras that don't need a base station (such cameras connect to WiFi). Obviously, if you choose the latter, you will have to pay for a subscription for the cameras to work as intended.
