We are starting out with outside camera's. What are your recommendation on how many and where for placement?

This depends on the details of the property you want to cover.

For instance, you could start with one camera per entrance. Motion detection range is 20-25 feet, so you'd need to take that into account when you determine the mounting location for each camera.
