It says that you can record to your iPhone after the 3 month free period is over but it never explains how. It also states that not all models can. So which models can and how do you go about setting it up?

You can never record directly to your phone (or computer or...). Your choice is to record to the cloud, which requires you to purchase a subscription after the trial runs out, or connect your devices to a SmartHub such as the VMB4540 or 5000 (some older models support local recording, too, but you have to eject the USB drive to view the recordings while the SmartHubs allow you to use the app to view them).
So, it sounds like you need to purchase one of those hubs if you're not going to use a subscription. The sub is more user-friendly than the local recordings but you pays your money and you takes your choice.
