I have an ARLO Ultra 2 with base VMB5000.  I want to add a Arlo Essential camera.  Will the recording from the Arlo Essential be available on the free 7-day cloud storage?

The Essential comes with the 3 month trial of smart that has 30 storage. After the expires you will need to subscribe to smart same as Ultra 2 when that  trial runs out. Only the Pro2 and older still have free 7 day. You can use local recordings if you connect it to the smart hub and not wifi.
