The XL is physically longer, and has a much larger battery (I believe it's about 2.5x more capacity than the Essential - unfortunately the datasheets don't say).

The XL has the spotlight (like the Arlo Essential Spotlight).

Note that IMO the claimed battery life for both cameras is overstated.  I don't think many folks will get a year with the XL.  But it will run a lot longer than the smaller Essential before needing recharging.
