i cant find how long the average battery charge lasts, and is there a way in this model to put batteries in for back up (i could just be blind and cant find it)

It has a non-replaceable battery. When it needs charging, the idea is to bring it inside and use the microUSB connector to refill it. Alternatively, you could use the proper solar panel to keep the battery topped off.

The battery should last 2-3 months, depending on signal strength/quality as well as the amount of recording and live viewing being used. Spec battery life is based on <5 minutes total per day, on average.
