I get “flashbulb” effect at the beginning of playback. The first second or two, the screen goes bright white but then adjusts to normal. Sometimes you miss what triggers it in the first place. Any suggestions on settings adjustment?

Not much you can do. That's likely the auto-exposure system in the camera determining the proper exposure. It's possible that using external AC power to the camera could help.
