Recently an update was released enabling those cameras to be connected via the Arlo hub instead of through wifi. Has anyone been able to do so?

Yup, I connected an E2 Indoor camera to my hub with no issues. You have to remove the camera from your account and add it back. A few steps into the process you'll get the selection for WiFi or your hub.
