My free trial has ended. Is the camera "essentially" a brick now? O can view and get notifications but there is no video for the notifications.

After your free trial you need a smart subscription for 30 day recordings to the cloud. If You connect directly to a Smart Hub you can have local storage on that. If connected to wifi then the local storage is not an option.
