Essential Spotlight doesn't connect to WiFi

Android app doesn't sense camera during handshake after scanning QR code. No error returned. It just loops. Followed instructions for Wi-Fi connection and rechecked parameters, signal, etc. Why doesn't this work as advertised? I'll give it one more shot before I return it. Shouldn't have to be an engineer.
