Arlo Audio Doorbell

I have had the Arlo Audio Doorbell for several months now and I must say it is not working 100% well.
In particular, though I am alerted when audio messages are left, there is no message audible when I retrieve it. I can see video as I have paired it with a camera .... but zero audio.
It may be that I am missing something in the setting on the app but I don’t believe so.
Is my unit defective relative to the experience of others? Any help please?
