Base station and smart hub?

I have a smart hub running 4 cameras and a doorbell. Do I really need the base station too?

Not sure why arlo changed the base station name to smart hub, it doesn’t do anything different, not very smart.

The smarthubs are the VMB4540 and VMB5000 - which are the two with direct access to local storage.
