I’m trying to add a six camera without having to pay a subscription I have five that it recognizes when I try to add number six it’s asking me to sign up for a plan

There is a 5 camera limit for 7-day free recording using the WireFree, Pro, and Pro-2 cameras. https://kb.arlo.com/88/What-are-the-available-Arlo-subscription-plans-and-how-much-cloud-recording-is-available

A workaround is to get a second base station. Set up that base on a different account, and shift one or more cameras to it. Then grant access to the cameras to your current account.
