Spend the $$ on the Tenergy batteries. You're quite right - there's a bunch of cheesy garbage on the market. I use a few different brads but they're all about the same in performance and price. The Tenergy are at least officially tested and sanctioned.

Growing more and more fed up with garbage CR123A batteries, I'm really looking for other options. I know there are some people who used simple charging operations, and I'm curious to find out how many have gone solar DIY, and what was your experience?

It seems panels and chargers can be had for relatively inexpensive investments. I use the battery replacement for one of my cameras, so I have one camera plugged in, but my other 2 cameras don't have outlets near them.

Streamlight batteries used to be good and reliable, but I went through 2 bad batches and got horrible battery life for my $40 worth of batteries. I had an even worse experience with rechargable CR123 batteries-there's just too many low-quality Li-ion batteries on the market.
