Unable to Set up email account with gmail, no SSL verification

Toward the end of the setup process I receive an email with a link to verify my email. (This is for email alerts.) When I click on the link I get a message saying something to the affect that SSl is not detected. I use GMAIL. I have gone to GMAIL settings and there is no option to add SSL. Is thers a way to get around this? I am useing a Samsung Galaxy phone.
