I had mentioned a custom ‘security’ option I was developing for my new Arlo camera that is mounted within reach. This is my first attempt, and I’m sure there could be improvements, but I think it satisfies me for now.

After some research, I decided to mount a plate with 3M VHB adhesive to the side of the Arlo through which I would secure a cable with a lock. After a very helpful phone call with someone from Philadelphia Security Products, I purchased plates, cables, and weatherproof locks (bought 2 as I’ll have 2 cameras within reach, rest will be up higher out of reach).

I then took my trusty dremel, cutting wheel and grinding tool to the plate as shown below.

After cutting/grinding, I was left with this (not an expert, but this'll do... 🙂 ).

The size was cut to match the relatively flat surface on the side of the Arlo’s battery case before it starts curving. I considered mounting to the body of the camera as opposed to the batter case, but figured if a thief/vandal was going to make the effort to rip off the battery case, then they’ll probably get it off regardless. I then prepared the case surface with some sandpaper and cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol after scuffing of the case by following the instructions, here (or watch the video). The area I scuffed and to which the plate affixes is lightly outlined in the 2nd pic below.

I peeled off the adhesive protective covering on the plate backing and pressed firmly to attach the plate to the Arlo camera. I then placed a couple of wood blocks on the sides of the plate against the camera with some weight above and left overnight to ensure maximum adhesion of the VHB to the Arlo camera side.

The optional skins that you can purchase for the Arlo have a handy slit in the side, into which the plates eyehole fits perfectly.

The next day, I threaded the cable through the eyehole of the now firmly attached plate, and crimped a loop on the cable end. The cable was fed through some wrought iron grating and locked on with the all-weather Sesamee 45111 lock. Any all-weather lock will do – I got a somewhat larger one as I was not going to hang it directly on the eyehole of the plate.

Finally, I mounted the Arlo on an all-metal VideoSecu MCB1W mount ($7.50 on Amazon).

I may have to put a clear coat on that camera mount as I’m afraid it may start to rust being outdoors year-round, but for now, it worked just fine. I like the multiple custom length fittings and the steel ball to optimally rotate and position the camera angle before securing.

Well, I’m sure there are many other (& probably better) ways of lightly securing the Arlo, but this is what I came up with first time around. Total prep time was only about an hour (mostly to Dremel the plate). If you’ve got suggestions or ideas for mounting my 2nd camera, by all means, reply and let me know!

I think this will serve as a reasonable deterrent; it won’t prevent anyone determined, but the casual thief will have a hard time getting this off.

There have been a few posts about this....

Netgear says add-ons ( mounts, etc ) are in the works.

But any camera mount with a standard screw mount will function with Arlo. There are amny models out that are tamper resistant.

see; https://community.netgear.com/t5/Installation/Mounting-options-for-my-Arlo-camera/m-p/76/highlight/true#M23

All you can probably do is make it a little more difficult that having it pulled off of the magnetic mount. I am using this mount and you could also utilize tamper resistant screws, but again they could still unscrew it from the tripod mount.

Greg

http://www.amazon.com/VideoSecu-Security-Adjustable-Universal-Mounting/dp/B000IDCDZY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421938718&sr=8-1&keywords=outdoor+camera+mounts&pebp=1421938720564&peasin=B000IDCDZY

So the screwmount is not secure as someone can simply unscrew the camera. So in my opinion, the solution is to get a screw mount and use locktite red:

Loctite® Threadlocker Red 271™ is designed for the permanent locking and sealing of threaded fasteners. The product cures when confined in the absence of air between close fitting metal surfaces. It protects threads from rust and corrosion and prevents loosening from shock and vibration. It is only removable once cured by heating up parts to 500°F (260°C).

You would have to be careful how you mount it so that you could access the battery compartment and still be able to change the batteries.

http://www.loctiteproducts.com/p/t_lkr_red/overview/Loctite-Threadlocker-Red-271.htm

I've tried 3 different screw mounts and 2 made it so the camera had to be removed to open the battery door....

Also, anything can be stolen and the locktight won't matter if they rip the bracket out.

So, I really don't RED locktight is a good idea. But If you think its good for you then by all means go for it.

I still think the best solution is to place it where its not easily accessable ...

That is a really good point - the bracket and the arlo arrive tomorrow - will see - also there is an issue with plastic and red locktite - they are not compatible - so the attatchment point on the arlo has to be metal .....will see tomorrow.....

Yes, the magnetic mount is a (security) joke, a stand-alone threaded mount (which I use) only means someone needs to unscrew the camera, and Lock-Tite can be defeated with a modicum of effort. But really, when does it stop? Will we be putting bars on our windows next or walking down the street with helmets? At some point we have to advance a little inherent trust and can only make things as safe as fate allows. Beyond that, if somebody wants to do the unthinkable, not much is going to stop him or her. Until we accept this we'll just be subjecting ourselves to unrelenting worry and premature gray hair.

Locktite doesn't appear to be a viable solution due to the limited battery compartment access needed. I think the idea here was to try to find a viable solution to deture theft of the camera - like locking ones car - but that may have flown over your premature grey head.

R_Lowe wrote:

So it arrived - I realized that the battery compartment would be unaccessable with the mount I bought. Locktite turns out not to be an answer........at least for me
