The Arlo base ( regular or Pro ) hooks into your router and sets up it's own wifi network just to speak to the cameras...

Also the base usu has a pretty good signal strength .

Mind that you phone hooks into your home wifi ( or celluar ) and speed here are more depentant on the actual phone / processor if you d/l is more than 5mbs or so (byw, min recommended is 1mbs upload speed ) OR as you say your home router may be weak.

As to the distance you can place the cameras from the base depends on many variables...tho the max rrange is listed at 300ft... this is a best case situation... with some constuction like brick , rebar , big mirrors, ( all things that can block wifi ) I've seen it as low as 20-30 ft. Not to mention other wifi interference from neighbors.

Long houses can be a problem... best case is to centrally locate the base so the cameras have good signals... this can be done with ethernet cable or extenders ( with ethernet port ) .

Hope this helps
