I currently have three Arlo pro two cameras and a base station. I do not pay a subscription fee because of that. I want to add the 1080p 2nd gen wired doorbell to the system. Can I do this and not have to pay a fee?

No, any camera model after the pro2(EOL) requires a paid subscription to access the arlo cloud services.

Some users get around this limitation by using a 4540/5000 arlo hub to get direct access to the backup storage device with the arlo mobile app only.

You can. But as @DannyBearAgain says, you won't have any cloud storage. You also won't be able to set up activity zones or use the smart notification features.

Adding a VMB4540 or VMB5000 will give you local recordings. But not the other features. Something to keep in mind - Activity zones are often needed with the doorbell, since the camera cannot be aimed.
