It's not available everywhere, as that tech isn't legal in some locations.

A very different problem. People generally can't read the license plate numbers in the field of view. Pixels per foot simply isn't high enough (among other things). But they can/do recognize other people that they know. So an algorithm could potentially do the same.

That said, I haven't tried the person recognition myself, so I don't have any direct experience with how well it works (or doesn't).

If someone drives up my driveway and passes by 4-5 cameras, you’ld think one of them would pick it up. a much easier issue to resolve then facial recognition… just saying

so cameras can’t make out some numbers/letters but will identify a person, now that’ll be something!

ultra2 barely pick up the person when viewing my video recordings , facial recognition on them ? would like to see the day

Some have. What's needed is quite different (and more expensive) hardware-

a much smaller field of view, so you get more pixels across the license plate
a faster frame rate to handle motion blur
suitable lighting if you want to pick up license plates after dark. Something good enough to overcome headlight/taillight glare.

But you are way off topic, since @HUMBOLDT didn't ask about license plates.

As I said above, if the video quality in your recordings is good enough for you to tell who the person is, then it is good enough for a machine learning algorithm to do the same. The barrier is not the video quality, it is the training of the AI.

I can easily recognize family members when they walk into the field of view. Facial features are part of it, but so is the overall body shape and the way they move. But I haven't tried the Arlo feature, so I don't know how well it performs.
