How often are preview stills taken?

I'm trying to figure out how often Arlo takes the preview stills that appear before you click the "Live" button to view the camera feed. I thought it only took a new still when you were viewing it, but this morning I checked in on my dog, and the still was of me from last night, when I was definitely not watching the camera. Does Arlo update these at random? I hope?

They are updated after every action. A live view or recording will update it.

Why? Most Arlo cameras are wireless and run on batteries. There's enough whining about battery life as it is - no need to make it worse.

The Q cameras are a different breed but the architecture for how everything works is the same. what is your specific need for more frequent updates?

You're misconstruing my question. This morning the preview still was an image of me while I was at home last night. I was not recording or watching a feed of myself, so if Arlo only ever generates these stills when the camera is active, that would imply someone else was watching my camera.
