Local storage without subscription

I have 5 arlo pro 3 and a doorbell with subscription for couple of yrs. I want to opt out of the subscription. Over $200 is just becoming a bit much. And I don't want to buy new subscription free cameras when these arlos are working well.

Can I plug in a HHD to my vm4540 arlo base and still receive notifications of any motions on my phone from the app and instally review any recording thru the app? Or not possible?

I wouldn't use any HDD since a cheaper thumb drive would be plenty sufficient and gets around need for power (or any limitations of power from the USB port). A 64GB drive will hold a lot of videos but if you want to keep a longer history, a 256GB drive would hold just that much more while maintaining a low price. YMMV.

FWIW, I copy all of my monthly videos to my NAS, reformat the drive and start fresh. Since the app will only view the last 30 days of stored videos anyway, keeping them on the NAS is an easier way to view any old ones rather than having to eject the drive for viewing on a computer.
