I have one camera mounted on the garage powered by AC with no battery in it. The camera is under the eaves and I used the cable and AC charger that came with the kit, the AC adapter is inside the garage and only the last 30 cm of cable is "outside" but still under the eaves and never gets wet by rain.

Having the battery installed means the camera will stay alive even in a power outage. However, to make that useful you also need a UPS for your modem, router and base so thay keep working, too. Make sure you use an appropriate charger that will keep the battery topped off (5v and 9v outputs) and that they are weatherproof for outdoor cameras. The cable has to be sealed where it connects to the camera.
