Huawei phone is not working with geofencing

I've got a new phone Huawai p20pro. I've had a lot of trouble getting it to work with Arlo geofencing. I've got it to the point that the geofencing will work if I have the arlo app open and on my screen, but if my phone is on lock screen then geofencing won't activate. Almost like the app is deactivated. Defeats the purpose of being able to casually come and go from the house and have my cameras activate by themselves. To recap; Arlo won't activate geofencing without me opening the app first (home and away) . Please suggest ways to fix this.
