Correct
My understanding is that Activity Zones require the cameras to be running constantly and so would drain the battery quickly, like in a few hours.

The way I believe it works is that when the IR sensor detects movement it sends the base station the previous 3 seconds of the camera’s video for pixel detection within the wanted area and decides what to do next.
Hence the cameras need to be externally powered.

Hi, I want to create active zones for my two arlo pro 2 cameras, but the system says that I have to plug in the cable, does this function only work with cable and not just battery?

Yes. Active zones only work when the device is connected to power outlet.

The alternative is to subscribe to Arlo Smart which works on battery power.
