Sounds like it's too late now to replace the drive with a smaller one but consider two 2TB drives so one can be plugged into each USB port. Hopefully, you can repurpose the bigger drive elsewhere.

I purchased a 4TB USB drive and formatted for back-up storage - it only seems to format 1.64 TB of space? Is this the maximum or something?

First, it's a lot cheaper and easier to use a thumb drive. I use a 16GB one that holds at least 2 month's worth of recordings. Use a bigger one if desired.

Also, you have to use FAT32 which is limited to 2TB maximum. The file system simply can't be bigger.

Thanks for your relpy and information. I have a bunch of cameras all recording at full HD 1080 in a high traffic location. I wanted to have several months worth of storage so I opted for the 4TB drive (based on my average file size and daily recordings a 16GB would not have been even close to sufficient). I wish Netgear would have indicated this limitation in their documentation or even their online instructions regarding the use of USB storage. It does say that it uses FAT32, but I have no idea what that is or the size limitation. This information could have saved me some $.
