Why does the USB symbol change color?

Sometimes the USB on the application changes color but I can't figure out why and there is no documentation that I can find on this.

it doesnt seem to be corelated when there is motion or the device is recording.

Does anyone know?

Mine only changes to orange when motion is detected and a video is being copied to the usb drive.

Exactly. Black means no recording at the moment, orange/amber is the notification that recording is taking place. It should coordinate with the motion (running man) icon.
