When subject moved from light to dark or shadow, subject was barely visible

Tried my new camera for the first time and was not impressed at all with the night vision. When subject moved from light to dark or shadow, subject was barely visible. Only a shadow in dark and unrecognizeable. Does it need to be totally dark for night vision to be effective and/or is there a way to adjust this? FPN

Post a daytime and nighttime screenshot so we can see what the camera is seeing.
