Do the Arlo cameras require a base station?

I am looking at the different options and I am wondering if the cameras connect directly to the cloud and I can skip the base station, or is it a required part of the configuration? If it's required, can you tell me what it does? If it's just a wifi access point, couldn't I just use my own existing setup?

The base is essentially a stripped down router. There's no way to bypass it since the WiFi is dedicated and can't be manipulated.
