Arlo have pledged to support Matter (https://matter.com.au/) with future products.

I was wondering if anyone knows what the plan is with existing products. Will devices such as the original Arlo Ultra and the VMB-5000 smart hub receive a firmware update to enable matter support?

I just received an EOL warning from Arlo about some of my older cameras. So I’m considering upgrading, but … I would prefer to purchase cameras that support Matter. Does anyone know if any existing cameras are expected to support Matter? The link to the announcements page in this thread was … nominally useful: I’m not seeing any announcements re Matter support.

In general, my advice is that you shouldn't ever buy a product in hopes that the manufacturer will add a feature it doesn't yet have (even if they've announced it - which Arlo hasn't in the case).

The current Matter specification (finished quite recently - October 2022) doesn't include cameras, so it is not yet relevant. The 2.0 spec does include cameras, but isn't scheduled to be finished in March/April of next year. That schedule might slip (fwiw, standards schedules usually do - and sometimes the specifications are never finished).

As far as the Arlo's press release - all it really said was that Arlo was joining the consortia in order to participate in the development of the specification. That's promising, but they haven't made any commitment to implement it at all. Which is IMO appropriate, since at the moment Matter 2.0 is still vaporware. All they could express at the moment is intent.

What you could do is defer upgrading for now (unless the EOL cameras fail, or lose critical features), and wait until next year. Any CES announcements would be made next January. There are several announcements this year from companies with products that are in scope for Matter 1.0.
