Always check the FAQs here first:

https://kb.arlo.com/000062284/Arlo-SmartHub-and-Base-Station-Compatibility

While the older bases such as the VMB4000 support newer cameras, things like local recordings are more difficult to use since you have to eject the drive for viewing on a computer vs. using the app. I suspect down the road you'd be better off with a SmartHub but if you're not having issues now there's not much reason to switch. I might wait until you want to upgrade some cameras and buy a system at that point which likely will reduce the overall cost compared to buying piecemeal.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the VMB4000 Base Station and the VMB5000 Smart Hub. I know the Base station has the alarm and the smart hub doesn't, but besides that what are the benefits of having one of the other. I have both of these and currently using the Base station for my wireless cameras, but wanting to see if I should switch it over to the base station.
